Earls Court owners Anthony Lyons and Simon Conway have bought the four-star Palais Maeterlinck hotel in Nice, France, through their investment company Matterhorn Capital for an undisclosed price.
The acquisition of the hotel, which was home to Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlinck, launches Matterhorn’s European resort division. The new division plans to develop a chain of nice resorts across Europe.
Conway, chief operating officer of Matterhorn Capital, said the company understood the importance and the history of the site and was keen that it continued to be a prominent local landmark and asset both to tourism and to the community.
“The Palais Maeterlinck has, to my mind, one of the finest locations in Nice and the Cote d’Azur and serves an invaluable purpose providing facilities to visitors and residents all year round,” said Conway.
He added: “We intend to use Matterhorn Capital’s leisure expertise, combined with a sizeable financial commitment, to improve and enhance the current facilities particularly the restaurant and bar – in order to meet ever-increasing demand as a direct consequence of the area becoming a year-round leisure destination.”
