English Cities Fund has stepped in to support the delivery of a £250m project in the heart of Stockport town centre.
The move follows the search for a partner launched by the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation in May last year.
The project will see the development of more than 1,200 new homes on an eight-acre site alongside retail, leisure and office space.
The site is adjacent to the town’s historic viaduct and the Stockport Interchange – a major redevelopment in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester, which started on site in March and will include the creation of a new urban park.
A planning application for the site will be submitted in summer 2024, with a target to complete the first phase by summer 2027.
ECF is a joint venture between Homes England, Legal & General and Muse Developments.
Lord Kerslake, chair of Stockport MDC, said: “This vision was one that reflects the ambitions laid out in our strategic business plan, including a way forward that delivers against our guiding principles of community, sustainability and innovation, and one that serves the needs of local people. Added to this, ECF’s shared ethos for public and private sector collaboration, and it was clear that ECF was the right partner for this next phase in Stockport’s transformation.”
