2013 WINNER COMPANY OF THE YEAR – RETAIL & LEISURE: AEG EUROPE

REITs, a landed estate and one of the UK’s largest leisure businesses are vying to follow in the footsteps of 2013 winner AEG Europe and be crowned Retail & Leisure Company of the Year at the 2014 EG Awards.

The UK’s largest REIT, British Land, has a retail and leisure portfolio nearing £7bn and is committed to 700,000 sq ft of development this year.

Retail rival Intu spent heavily on shopping centres this year, snapping up three Westfield assets for more than £860m and tying up joint ventures with international investment partners including KWAP, QIC and CPPIB.

Also making a big play in the retail sector this year is AIM-listed NewRiver Retail, which has seen its portfolio value swell to more than £700m with the purchase of a trio of malls from the Swallowtail portfolio and a £90m package of 202 pubs from Marston.

The Crown Estate’s £1.5bn transformation of Regent Street continues to evolve, with fresh retailers signing up to the estate. Its 10 New Burlington Street development was fully let within a month, providing a debut UK flagship for US retailer J Crew.

In the leisure sphere, Whitbread has been taking on greater development risk by buying freehold sites unconditionally. It has built 133 new hotels in the past three years, including a 180-bedroom Premier Inn on Pacific Quay, Glasgow, completed in time for the Commonwealth Games.

2013 WINNER EG FRONT COVER OF THE YEAR: CASTLEMEAD CARE

EGA-cover-of-the-year-2013A picture speaks a thousand words and when it is the cover of Estates Gazette, it speaks a lot of words to a lot of very important people. The EG Front Cover Award is one of the most coveted of EG’s Awards. As one of the best marketing opportunities in the commercial real estate market, having your design voted the best of the year means your message has been heard.

A bespectacled fluffy poodle secured the prize for developer Castlemead Care last year and the gong meant a lot to partner Tony Cole. “Castlemead is a young but fast-growing company and the award from the wider industry signalled our arrival as a major force in the care sector,” he said.

Who will be the victor this year?
