Protestors gathered outside
The meeting, which is to run over two nights to allow all parties to be heard, in an unprecedented move by Barnet council, was to discuss the development drawn up by Hammerson, Brookfield Europe, and Standard Life.
The scheme proposes 7,500 new homes, 4m sq ft of offices, and a 592,000 sq ft extension to the Brent Cross shopping centre.
However, protestors say they are concerned that there will be up to 29,000 extra cars on the road, with inadequate provision for public transport, and that the scheme is not sustainable.
Rows have also focused on a new waste centre which features in the proposals.
Jonathan Joseph, development director at the Brent Cross Cricklewood Partnership, said it was “always a matter of regret” when development plans met with local opposition, and that concerns about the plant were “overstated”.
The second half of the meeting will run this evening.
