EH attacked for wasting public money

English Heritage has been attacked for overstepping its remit and wasting public money.

The Corporation of London has called for the quangos powers to be curtailed.

In a letter to the DCMS, the government department that funds EH, the corporation states that only the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment should be consulted about tall buildings. The letter was written as a response to the DCMS five-year review of EH.

Writing in this Saturdays Estates Gazette (p57), Mayor for London Ken Livingstone attacked EH for forcing an inquiry into Gerald Ronsons Heron tower, which he said was “an extraordinary waste of public time and money”.

Livingstone also said: “English Heritage needs to be directed back to its core duty of protecting the fabric of our historic environment rather than worrying about Londons skyline.

“That should be left to the elected authorities.”
