End of production of the Mini engine could pave way for new BMW plant in West Midlands

BMW wants to build a £450m plant at Hams Hall, near Birmingham, capable of producing 400,000 engines a year for Rover and BMW models. The programme depends on government aid of between ӯ40m and £60m.

Meanwhile, at the Paris Motor Show, BMW chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder announced the decision to abandon production of the Mini engine in Britain. Engines will be shipped over from across the Atlantic for assembly at the Rover plant in Longbridge, Birmingham. It ends speculation that the Mini has reached the end of the road and could pave the way for the new BMW engine plant in Britain.
