England needs Department of Land Use

The country needs a Department of Land Use to provide a coherent strategy for land usage, the Campaign to Protect Rural England argues in a report that canvases the views of 14 experts.

There is no hope of sensible land use while planning, agriculture, infrastructure and long-term transport planning are controlled by four different government departments, Lord Deben, the former Conservative environment secretary, said.

Meanwhile, greater population density can mean more parks and gardens, and improved public access, according to architect Sir Terry Farrell.
