English Heritage has bought Ditherington Flax Mill, in Shrewsbury.
Sir Neil described the building as one of the most important “in England or anywhere”. The building is said to be the ancestor of today’s skyscrapers the first iron-framed building in the world.
English Heritage will look for a developer to take on the whole site, which includes several other listed structures, but it may also have room for housing.
