English Partnerships earmarks sites for regeneration

English Partnerships (EP) has been ordered to “search out and deliver” sites for housing and urban regeneration, in its new role as the government’s regeneration “expert”. 

Speaking at the end of the second stage of the government’s review of EP’s role, deputy prime minister John Prescott announced an initial list of sites on which EP will concentrate its efforts.

He said: “I am instructing English Partnerships to use its new role to search out and deliver even more land for housing and sustainable urban development.

“I also want English Partnerships to help in regenerating those places most badly affected by abandonment and decay.”

Prescott said that EP will “work closely with the Housing Corporation, and with other key agencies including the Regional Development Agencies, to ensure effective co-ordination in the delivery of plans for key worker and affordable housing.”

The initial list of sites comprises:

  • East of England: Gardiners Lane, Basildon; Dry Street, Basildon; Five Links, Basildon; Harlow Sports Centre; Hatfield town centre; Spencers Park, Hemel Hempstead; Paradise Fields; Hemel Hempstead; Breakspear, Hemel Hempstead; Stevenage town centre; west Stevenage; various sites in Peterborough
  • North East: Middlehaven, Middlesbrough; North Ban, Stockton; Haverton Hill, Stockton
  • North West: Kings Waterfront, Liverpool; various Liverpool Land Development Co sites, Liverpool; east Preston; Cuerdon Regional Business Park, Preston; Castlefields, Runcorn; Skelmersdale town centre; Omega, Warrington
  • Yorkshire & the Humber: various Urban Regeneration Company  (URC) sites in Sheffield
  • East Midlands: various URC sites in Corby; south-west Northampton 
  • West Midlands: Telford town centre; south Telford (Woodside); Lightmoor, Telford; East Ketley Millennium Community, Telford; Lawley, Telford
  • South West: RAF Locking, Weston-super-Mare 
  • South East: “expansion sites” in Crawley; Crawley town centre; central Milton Keynes; Campbell Park, Milton Keynes; Oak Grove Millennium Community, Milton Keynes; Bletchley/MK Stadium, Milton Keynes; Broughton Atterbury, Milton Keynes; East Flank, Milton Keynes; West Flank, Milton Keynes; Milton Keynes National Bowl/East Ashland
  • London: Greenwich Peninsula, including the Millennium Community
  • Cross-regional: various Key Worker Housing Initiative sites

A further list of sites will be announced in the autumn.
