Environmentalists are expected to complain that the government will resort to building more homes in five years time in the south east.
Their concern is expected to follow deputy prime minister John Prescott’s scaling down of a 15-year housing plan to one of five years’ duration for the region.
He will announce this week or early next week that the original plan of 43,000 new homes a year has been cut back to nearer 33,000.
