EPC deadlines will be delayed, says Whitehall

Domestic EPC targets will be “overhauled” as the government rows back on its green policies.

Whitehall officials have said the system of energy performance certificates needs “fundamental reform”.

They said the government supported delaying a deadline for landlords in England and Wales to meet mandatory C and above efficiency standards beyond the proposed date of April 2025.

On Monday, the prime minister indicated that he was ready to soften the government’s green policies, saying he did not wish to “hassle” voters or add to household bills at a time of high inflation.

This has been echoed by levelling up secretary Michael Gove, who said ministers did not want to risk “creating a backlash” by imposing costly policies that undermined support for net zero climate goals.

He said he wanted to “ease off” imposing new burdens on homeowners and added that the government would not “force individuals to pay excessive sums at this stage”.

A retreat over the planned ban on gas boilers has also been signalled.
