Equity release sales among the over-60s jumped by 28% last year.
Official figures from the Financial Conduct Authority show £5.2bn was released from residential property over the year.
Advisory firm Bowmore Financial Planning, which obtained the numbers through a Freedom of Information request, said older people were using equity release mortgages to cover rising living expenses, “without properly understanding the costs”.
