EU ministers question Brown’s spending proposals

European Union member states have attacked Britain’s public spending plans and rising deficit in a sign of growing concern about the breakdown of fiscal discipline in Europe.

Finance ministers will next week criticise chancellor Gordon Brown’s plans to rebuild public services, arguing his moves could put Britain in breach of the EU’s stability and growth pact.

It is the first time that Brown has been singled out for such criticism.
