European data centre take-up quadruples

Take-up across key European data centre markets has soared over the past three months.

According to CBRE, take-up increased to 215MW in the quarter to 30 September across the Frankfurt, Paris, London, Amsterdam and Dublin markets. The figure was nearly quadruple the previous quarter’s 54MW, thanks to prelet capacity that was delivered in Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

CBRE expects Q4 take-up to exceed Q3 figures, at 265MW, as a number of sizable data centres in Paris, Frankfurt and London are on track to open before the end of the year, providing new supply of around 283MW.

As such, CBRE expects new supply across the five markets in 2023 to hit 572MW, with an equal amount of take-up forecast for the same period.

Andrew Jay, head of data centre solutions at CBRE, said: “With the exponential growth of AI, it’s unlikely that demand will slow down anytime soon. The challenge remains in the lack of available power and AI-appropriate facilities across Europe.”
