European nationals refused UK mortgages over Brexit uncertainty

Nationals of other European Union countries living in the UK are being denied mortgages because of concerns about whether they will be allowed to remain in the country after Brexit, according to Patricia Connell, a representative of the French community here.

Banks are refusing to give mortgages to people without permanent residency because they may not be allowed to remain here, she said.

Mortgage lenders are keen to pursue a business as usual agenda through the Brexit negotiation period, a spokesman for the Council for Mortgage Lenders said.
