Race to EC2
If you missed out on a spot in last weekend’s Ride 100, head to Exchange Square at Broadgate, EC2, on 12 August to take part in the final of the Asda StreetVelodrome series. Going the distance for cancer charities
Builders Merchants Federation chairman Peter Hindle led a charge of 130 of his colleagues at building materials manufacturer Saint-Gobain on a four-day, 425-mile cycle from London to Blois, France – home to archives detailing the history of the 350-year-old firm. Hindle, the company’s senior vice-president of sustainable habitat across UK, Ireland and South Africa, said the £100,000 raised for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Irish Cancer Society during the ride last month was a “great achievement”.
Cricket stars put Shropshire’s best to the test
Who needs the Ashes? Around 700 of Shropshire’s property and business fraternity watched some of the world’s best cricket players when an all-star team challenged a local side last month. West Indies fast bowler Corey Collymore and Indian opening batsman Wasim Jaffer were among the Invitation XI side who beat the home side by 71 runs at Wrekin College. The match was organised by Shropshire County Cricket Club, whose chairman is Towler Shaw Roberts partner Toby Shaw. The annual event, sponsored by recruitment firm ResourceBank, attracted staff from Balfours, Bulleys, Strutt & Parker, and Marshall & Marshall among others. The event raised £3,400 towards the new Wrekin Business School.
The bright stuff
Industrial Agents Society chairman Jonathan Robinson and DTZ colleague Marcus Phayer sported matching Hawaiian-print suits at the IAS West Midlands summer barbecue. They were not to be outdone at the “Aloha”-themed party, featuring a sea of garish floral shirts, straw skirts and wacky sunglasses at Birmingham’s Vertu Bar on 16 July. Sponsors M7 Real Estate, London & Cambridge Properties, St Modwen, LaSalle Investment Management, Barques Design, and City Office Interiors supported the event, which raised £4,000 for NICE, formerly the Red Boots charity, and the Shakespeare Hospice.
Central screens
British Land is organising an outdoor cinema festival at its Paddington Central scheme, W2, featuring a series of cult and popular films. Throughout August, classics such as Mission Impossible, The Truman Show and Sleepless in Seattle will be screened at Sheldon Square, alongside a programme of public entertainment in the area. And on consecutive nights from 12 August, Dead Poets Society, Jumanji, Flubber and Robots will be shown as part of a Robin Williams tribute week. Tim Haddon, asset manager at British Land, said: “We are going all out to help people enjoy their after-work and lunchtime experiences.” For more information visit www.paddingtoncentral.com or follow @PaddingtonCen on Twitter.
Talbot to share Everest experiences
Nick Talbot, the RICS director who has twice attempted to be the first person with cystic fibrosis to climb Mount Everest only to be thwarted by major catastrophies, will be the guest speaker at a fundraising dinner in October. Talbot was mid-expedition when an earthquake devastated Nepal in April, setting off an avalanche. Talbot suffered cracked ribs as a result. He was also forced to abandon his first attempt at climbing the peak in 2014 when another avalanche killed 16 sherpas. Undeterred, he says he is determined to reach the peak and plans to set off again next year. Talbot will be speaking at a fundraising event for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, hosted by residential lettings specialist Benham & Reeves, on 6 October at The Cumberland hotel, W1. Tickets are £150 each. www.brlets.co.uk/cftrustevent
