Everton Football Club has secured an agreement with Liverpool city council to pursue plans for a new stadium and major mixed-use development at Walton Hall Park in north Liverpool.
The club and the council have launched a consultation on the scheme and have committed to work with Liverpool Mutual Homes to work up detailed plans ahead of an application being submitted within the next 12 months.
The announcement follows an extensive search by the football club to find a new home in the city.
The proposed scheme will be anchored by a new stadium and is expected to include extensive new community and leisure facilities as well as retaining much of the existing park.
Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “ We know that this is an area of the city that requires substantial investment and this project could bring this in a unique form.
“Everton’s investment into this area would be the catalyst for a development which could make a real difference. We know from other regeneration schemes that opportunities like this can lead to significant economic and social benefits.”
Anderson said the scheme would also address social needs such as health and education and would be an opportunity to create “first-class leisure and recreational facilities”.
