Exclusive: Brunswick tipped to take on hotel and leisure scheme in Cardiff

Local developer Brunswick is leading the consortium which has been tipped to take on a 23,225 sq m (250,000 sq ft) retail and leisure scheme next to the new Millennium rugby stadium in Cardiff.

Roger Dean, group development director of Brunswick, confirmed that detailed discussions were taking place and there would be “some news at the end of this week or next”.

DTZ Debenham Thorpe is offering the 125-year lease on Westgate Street for freeholder the Welsh Rugby Union. Director Nigel Webb was unavailble for comment.

The consortium plans to anchor the scheme with a hotel and surround a pedestrianised plaza with restaurants and other licensed leisure outlets.

Hotel operators including Malmaison, Hilton, Sheraton, Westin, Intercontinental and Holiday Inn have all been looking to follow Sir Rocco Forte’s lead at Cardiff Bay and start new operations in the Welsh capital.
