Environment Secretary John Gummer has called in five major retail applications in Northamptonshire on the grounds that “all were of a similar type of development and therefore raised issues of more than just local importance.”
The fifth and latest planning application, Wilson Bowden’s proposals for 8ha (20 acres) on the former British Steel works site in Corby, does not infringe PPG6, according to a spokesperson for Corby Council. The outline proposals are for a 11,148 sq m (120,000 sq ft) on an edge of town site close to housing and existing retail including an Asda store.
According to a letter sent to the councils, the DOE: “Wishes to consider the suitability of the sites for the scale and size of the proposed developments; the effects of the developments individually and cumulatively on the vitality of the area.”
