Virgin Cinemas has chosen Cardiff city centre to launch its first 16-screen Megaplex in-town operation. The operator will anchor a proposed 9,290 sq m (100,000 sq ft) leisure scheme in Mary Ann Street.
London-based developer EJ Developments has signed up Virgin on a 35-year lease and is now looking for licensed leisure operators to fill the remaining 2,787 sq m (30,000 sq ft) of the scheme.
The development site is in the southern part of the city centre core and close to the Cardiff International Arena. It has been zoned for cinema, B2-uses and EJD is currently working up a detailed planning application for submission next month.
“This is a massive vote of confidence in Cardiff city centre,” said Barrie Jones, director of EJD. “Virgin wanted to be in the city and it is one of the few city centre places in the UK where they could put this number of screens.”
EJD acquired the site from Steep Holm Property Advisors last year.
