Exclusive WRU plans 250,000 sq ft of retail and leisure at Cardiff Arms Park

The Welsh Rugby Union is planning a 23,225 sq m (250,000 sq ft) retail and leisure scheme at Cardiff Arms Park in the city centre.

Four shortlisted developers are putting forward plans for a six or seven storey scheme, including retail, leisure, offices and possibly a hotel, linking into the new Millennium Stadium. Retail proposals involve a range of small outlets rather than a department store anchor.

DTZ Debenham Thorpe is inviting offers for a 125 year lease on the 0.4ha (1 acre) site, which fronts Westgate Street in the centre of Cardiff.

The WRU is converting Cardiff Arms Park into a new 73,500 seater stadium, which is being developed in phases. The new arena will be reopened in January 1999.
