Planning professionals have backed Kate Barker’s call this week for more homes and workplaces to be built in the green belt.
Robert Upton, secretary-general of the Royal Town Planning Institute, called the green belt a “sacred cow”.
Oliver Hartwich, a planning expert at the Policy Exchange think-tank, said it was more important to have green cities than green belts that people rarely visited.
