Extension for Newry city proposed

Developers are being sought for a 15-acre opportunity in Newry, Northern Ireland.

Newry & Mourne district council this week launched its search for a partner to transform the brownfield Albert Basin site in the heart of Newry city into a major mixed-use development.

It said that, given the location of the site, it envisaged uses including offices, restaurants and ancillary retailing with public realm, civic and community use, recreation, leisure and tourism and an “appropriate” number of homes, 40 of which must be affordable.

Newry has ruled out any large-scale retail development at the site.

The local authority said that it was “seeking a flagship development, which will unlock the catalytic potential of the Albert Basin”.

The land, which is wholly owned by the council, is a designated opportunity site and acts as a connection between Belfast and Dublin.

Interested parties have until 1 September to submit proposals.
