Extinction Rebellion will target the City of London for at least two weeks from Monday, warning that it expects “to be disruptive”.
The climate change activist group has said that it will not be targeting public transport, after a public backlash to its tactics in 2019.
Tim Crosland, an Extinction Rebellion activist and former government lawyer, said: “We’ll be targeting the City of London because it’s time that people understand the real contribution of the UK to this crisis. The City of London is the arch-financier of the carbon economy. It supports 15% of global carbon emissions.”
Extinction Rebellion said the protests would be “joyous” and have a “celebratory” air while highlighting the billions of pounds poured into fossil fuels and high-carbon activities by financiers based in London’s financial district.
