Factory outlet in battle over retail extension

Royal & Sun Alliance Property Investments has upped the ante in its battle against the planned extension to BAA McArthurGlen’s designer outlet village in Swindon.

R&SA has submitted an application to Swindon council for 9,841m2 (105,000 sq ft) of retail in Swindon’s town centre.

But it is threatening to proceed only if the council rejects BAA McArthurGlen’s application to extend the Great Western Designer Outlet Village with more retail, a cinema and a food court.

The move comes six weeks after RS&A and MEPC, owner of the town’s Brunel centre, sent a joint letter to the Government Office for the South West complaining that the extension contradicts national planning guidance on town centres.
