Factory outlet struggles for survival

London & Cambridge Properties is ready to defend its called-in £100m factory outlet in Litchfield, West Midlands this month.

The 400,000 sq ft (37,160m2) out-of-town scheme was called in last October. The secretary of state cited over-development in the area as the principal reason for holding an inquiry.

However, there were also significant objections from Walsall council. Walsall is to house a rival proposal put together by St Modwen Properties and local developer WA Goold for a 250,000 sq ft (23,225m2) centre on the site of the former Shannons Mill in the centre of the town.

L&C retail director Steve Carlin said: “We’re going to argue against the premise of PPG 6.”

The inquiry begins in Litchfield on 26 March.
