Midlands-based AF Blakemore & Son is to create the largest Spar franchise company in the UK with more than 1,000 stores.
It has acquired family-owned Spar retail and wholesale business Capper & Co, and is merging the businesses to create 1,096 Spar stores, producing a combined turnover of £1.1bn.
AF Blakemore’s group managing director, Peter Blakemore, said: “This is a great opportunity to bring two long-established, family owned businesses together and allow us to move forward in the growing UK convenience store sector.”
Pinsent Masons’ corporate partner Andrew Hornigold, which advised Blakemore, said: “AF Blakemore has had a continuous expansion programme, and the deal will see the creation of a group with a £1.1bn turnover and the formation of the single largest SPAR franchise in the country. The acquisition will allow AF Blakemore to move forward in the rapidly growing UK convenience store sector.”
