Gap and H&M Hennes have signed up for flagship schemes at Martineau Place, Birmingham Alliance’s retail development.
Hennes is taking a three-storey 3,019 sq m (32,500 sq ft) flagship store on the corner of Corporation Street, which will front onto a newly pedestrianised square. Meanwhile, Gap’s 2,159 sq m (23,250 sq ft) unit will be on the corner of Union Street and Corporation Street.which will be its second Birmingham store.
Paul Spooner, director of economic development at Birmingham council said: “Gap and Hennes are exactly the sort of lifestyle retailers we want in Birmingham and their deciding to invest in flagship stores reaffirms the city’s position.
Although exact rents would not be confirmed, the retailers will pay around £2,153 to £2,691 per sq m (£200 to £250 per sq ft) in rent. Gap and Hennes will join Sainsbury’s, which recently announced its plans for its first Sainsbury’s Central store in the West Midlands at the scheme.
On completion, Martineau Place will provide 16,722 sq m (180,000 sq ft). Gap and Hennes should be trading by October this year and overall completion is expected in Autumn 2001.
Martineau Place is due for completion next autumn. Birmingham Alliance’s New Bull Ring will be ready in 2003 while Martineau Galleries has a 2007 completion date.
