There are fears that any cuts in European funding will damage the fragile economy of rural Wales. Rural Wales has Objective 5b status. This gives it access to structural funds earmarked for declining rural regions. But the Development Board for Rural Wales fears the area may suffer when the European Commission redraws the map in 1999.
