Filton refusal revives hopes for rival Bristol airport plan

The refusal last week of BAes application to turn Filton airfield near Bristol into a regional airport has prompted a consortium to revive its proposals for an airport on a greenfield site close to the Second Severn Crossing.

In 1994, the Bristol-based European Airports Consortium announced plans to develop a £400m international airport on 809ha (2,000 acres) between the M4 and the M49 (which links the M5 with the new Severn crossing). However, despite the consortium’s announcement, a planning application has yet to submitted.

· Total Oil is to revise its plans for a new motorway service station on the M4 at Pucklechurch, near Bristol. The original plan was to provide services on both sides of the motorway, but the northern site falls within the green belt. Total now says it can provide full services on the south side of the motorway only, with access off the proposed new Avon Link Road.
