Final protest planned against Hammersmith revamp

A protest outside London’s City Hall is planned to halt progress of Helical Bar’s and Grainger’s Hammersmith town hall redevelopment.

Campaign group Save our Skyline is rallying protestors for a demonstration this Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday “as a final push”, to persuade Mayor of London Boris Johnson to block the £110m W6 makeover.

King Street Developments – a joint venture between Helical Bar and Grainger – was given the go-ahead for the development by Hammersmith & Fulham council earlier this month.

Plans include knocking down three buildings on the King Street site and replacing them with four mixed-use blocks, ranging from nine to 15 storeys and comprising 290 flats, shops and offices. A 21,527 sq ft supermarket is also planned.

A spokesman for SoS, said: “It is time to really make some noise to show the mayor and Greater London Authority the strength of feeling locally, so we need a large turnout.”

The approved proposals, submitted in August, come after initial plans for a new public square surrounded by cafés and restaurants, 320 homes, a new council HQ and a supermarket, lodged in March 2010, were rejected, following significant public opposition.
