Fire-damaged Cardiff landmark set for £15m rebirth

Burleigh Estates is hoping for the go-ahead this week to flatten the fire-ravaged Central Hotel in Cardiff and replace it with a £15m mixed-use scheme.

Cardiff councillors are being recommended to give detailed consent on Wednesday for the 10-storey block, which will comprise 49 flats and a Sports Café.

The fate of the listed landmark in St Mary Street, close to the city’s Central Station, has been the subject of discussions between Burleigh, Cardiff planners and Welsh historic monuments body Cadw for two years.

The 120-year old hotel in St Mary Street was destroyed by fire in January 2003.

The building fell vacant the previous year when sole tenant The Old Monk Company went bust.

Adam Skinner of Burleigh Estates said, “This has been a difficult process because the council quite correctly wanted a very high quality building with the very best of materials.

“I hope we have now reached an outcome that satisfies all parties. Certainly, it will be a superb replacement for what has become a very run-down and poor site.”
