First 50 RGF winners to share £450m

 

Fifty projects have been awarded £450m as part of an accelerated first round of the £1.4bn regional growth fund, the government announced today.

 

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has revealed details of the first round winners showing a big increase from the £250m initially proposed for round one.

 

And as of today, the second round of the fund is open, with bidders able to compete for the remainder of the cash, meaning there will no longer be a third round as had been previously anticipated.

 

In total, 464 bids were submitted for round one, asking for a total £2.8bn.

 

BIS said the 50 chosen projects should create 27,000 jobs directly and a further 100,000 supply chain positions, with the £450m allocated leveraging more than £2.5bn ofn private sector investment.

 

Winning bids included an expansion of the Haribo factory in Wakefield, Bruntwood’s scheme to convert a hospital in Manchester into a biomedical centre of excellence and the construction of a manufacturing plant on the Lotte Chemical site in

 

Teesside to develop resins for food and drink packaging.

 

The closing date for round two bids is noon on 1 July 2011.
