Plans for the £500m redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station have been unveiled.
Alongside an upgrade and enlargement of the station, the John McAslan & Partners-designed Birmingham Gateway scheme proposes the construction of two public squares and pedestrian links feeding through to the planned Metro stop in Stephenson Street.
The Birmingham New Street partners Network Rail, Birmingham council, Advantage West Midlands, Centro and the West Midlands Passenger Transport Authority will now work on securing funding and planning consent, with work scheduled to start in 2008.
Also this week, transport minister Alistair Darling pledged “substantial” government funding for the scheme, which he said was “essential for Birmingham and the national rail network”.
