First look at Bradford’s city centre market

Bradford City Council has released the first image of its market development as plans for its new city centre are set to be approved.

The designs by Greig and Stephenson architects include the development of a food-focused market on Darley Street and the redevelopment of Kirkgate Market as a non-food market in the Kirkgate Centre.

The plans form part of Bradford’s Top of Town masterplan, which includes a 6.5-acre mixed-use residential-led development of Oastler Market once the new markets open.

Consultations for the development will continue with the council expecting construction to start in January 2020 and the market to open by Easter 2021.

Alex Ross-Shaw, executive member for regeneration, planning and transport at Bradford Council, said: “Creating a new market at the heart of Darley Street will be brilliant for Bradford.

“We believe that we already have a fantastic retail and shopping offer around the bottom of the town, including the Broadway Centre. The masterplan, by revitalising the city centre at the top of the town, will ensure that the entire city centre provides a diverse, attractive and vibrant public environment for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
