Fitzwilton, owner of Northern Ireland’s Wellworth supermarket chain, has given Safeway an ultimatum – either make a £180m bid for it or take a 50% stake in a joint venture that would expand into the Republic.
Analysts believe that Safeway will choose the joint venture route.
