PowerGen has shortlisted five bidders to buy three of its large power stations.
The bids have come from Centrica, Scottish Power, Scottish & Southern, Electricite de France and NRG of the US. Analysts estimate the sale should raise £1bn.
The stations are in Nottinghamshire, north Wales and Hertfordshire.
