Five teams chosen to rebuild Manchester

Five teams of designers and architects have been shortlisted in the contest to redesign the centre of Manchester in the wake of the IRA bomb, in June. They have been given £20,000 and six weeks to produce a plan to transform the city centre with parks, plazas, riverside cafes, shops, cycle lanes, tourist attractions and better access for public transport. Empty warehouses and factories could provide homes.

The shortlisted groups for the £21m project are led by Halliday Meecham Llewlyn Davies, EDAW, R James Chapman and Building Design Partnership.
