FoE lashes planning green paper

Environmental lobbyists have attacked the government’s planning proposals at a House of Commons committee inquiry into the planning green paper.

Friends of the Earth (FoE) this morning accused the government of basing its proposals on “a false set of assumptions” and said that Lord Falconer had ignored the result of previous government research.

Hugh Ellis, chief planning campaigner at FoE, told the 17-strong Transport, Local Government and the Regions Committee: “The green paper is a structural response to a managerial problem. It doesn’t focus on real problems like lack of resources. Instead it proposes sweeping structural changes to the system, which nobody wants.”

He added that the proposals made in the Welsh planning green paper, which simply focus on improving the existing system, were “excellent”.
