Food sales up 1.6%

Food sales rose by 1.6% in the three months to September, the largest increase since November 2013, figures from KPMG and the British Retail Consortium show.

Total sales rose by 1.3% in September and 1% in the three-month period, supported by stronger food sales, BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said.

A number of retailers have warned recently that higher import costs could affect business next year. There is likely to be some upward pressure on prices heading into 2017, the BRC’s head of retail insight and analytics, Rachel Lund, said.
