Footfall proves disappointing for retailers

Customer visits to retail outlets fell 8% on Saturday compared with the year earlier, and were down 4% on Sunday, according to data from Springboard, which monitors footfall nationwide. Footfall on Boxing Day was down 10.5%.

Meanwhile, data from Postcode Anywhere showed that while internet sales were making up for some of the deficit, sales over the past few days had not matched those of Black Friday.

Online transactions on Boxing Day were 47% higher on the year.
