Footfall on Britain’s high streets has slumped by around 5% as the drift back to the office slows.
Springboard’s “back to the office” benchmark, which tracks areas in central London that are dominated by offices rather than retail outlets, shows footfall declined by 4.2% over the past week. In regional cities it fell by 5.1%.
The fall is potentially because of the rising number of Covid-19 cases being reported.
While footfall across UK retail spots is 27.9% higher than last year, when lockdowns forced the closure of most high street shops, it is 14% below pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
