Ford is due to complete a review next month which could see the closure of car manufacturing at its Dagenham plant, in East London.
However, it is thought that closure of car assembly would be accompanies by increased investment in its diesel engine operations.
The future of its Halewood, Liverpool transmission operation is also being reviewed.
