Foreign investors show less preference for UK property

Investor appetite for UK property has stayed level over the past year despite the country’s decision to leave the European Union, BrickVest’s latest commercial property Barometer survey has shown.

Although the percentage of investors targeting the UK as their primary focus fell only from 31% to 30% in the past year, the fall was greater among investors from every region outside the UK.

Some 19% of French investors said the UK was their preferred place of investment, down from 24% last year. For German investors, the fall was from 22% to 19%.

However, both German and US investors still saw the UK as the second most preferred region to invest in, outside of their domestic markets.

Emmanuel Lumineau, chief executive of BrickVest, said: “Despite Brexit, our latest Barometer shows the UK remains the preferred location to invest in from our global investor base, but uncertainty created [by the referendum vote] is beginning to take effect.

“We have seen plenty of appetite from investors for property as an asset class and it is clear that many of our users want to take advantage of the vote.”

The survey included 3,000 investors, with 37% from the UK, 14% from Germany, 13% from France, 8% from the US and the rest from other regions.
