The ownership of UK-listed shares by British pension funds and insurers has slumped to its lowest level since records began, according to official figures.
The proportion of the overall London share market owned by those institutions had fallen to 4.2% by the end of last year, from 4.3% in 2020. That compares with 45.7% in 1997 and a high point of 52.1% in 1990.
The latest data on ownership of UK-listed shares found that the proportion owned by overseas investors had risen to 57.7%, also a record. The proportion owned by UK-resident individuals fell to 10.8%. This was down from 12% in 2020, 16.5% in 1997 and 54% in 1963.
