Former Brighton Woolworths set for office and resi revamp

A site once home to Brighton’s first Woolworths store is set for a new lease of life as an office-led mixed-use development.

Curzon Street Partners’ plans for 181-185 Western Road in the town centre would see the three-storey art deco building redeveloped as a three- to six-storey block with 50,000 sq ft office space on the first to fourth floors and 15 flats and a three-bedroom townhouse.

The Landivar Architects-designed proposals would retain some 24,000 sq ft of retail on the ground floor.

The site was an early Woolworths stores in Brighton, opening in 1916, according to a public consultation for the project.

Woolworths rebuilt the store as part of a road widening project in the 1930s, expanding into neighbouring buildings, but scaled back in the 1980s, leasing out 185 Western Road. Today the retail space in the building is occupied by H&M.
