Former BT offices will become Birmingham’s first office-to-residential conversion

Touchstone Housing Association is buying a 10-storey former BT office block in Birmingham for conversion into flats, in the first significant deal of its kind in the city.

The purchaser is paying around £2m for the 5,109 sq m (55,000 sq ft) vacant1960s building at 95 New Hall Street.

Geoff Thomas, of selling agent DTZ Debenham Thorpe, confirmed that the deal marks the first major office-to-residential redevelopment in Birmingham. A planning application is expected to be submitted shortly.

BT is rationalising its property holdings as part of its Workstyle 2000 programme. The telecommunications company is moving its Birmingham staff into new offices at Argent’s Brindleyplace.
