Former intu chairman Strachan joins CWM

Niche retail agency CWM has appointed former intu chairman John Strachan as its chairman, in a newly created role.

Strachan had joined intu as a non-executive director in 2015 before he was appointed as its chairman in 2017, serving for three years until the landlord’s collapse last year.

Before that, Strachan was global head of retail services and chairman of the retail board at Cushman & Wakefield. He was also on the board of retail professional organisation ICSC.

Strachan is a board member of European Council of Shopping Places, an association based in Brussels, and is also on the advisory board of retail private equity fund True Global.

CWM said that Strachan will help the firm in its “next level of growth”. The 40-strong agency seeks to recruit more staff for its out-of-town, shopping centre leasing, investment, tenant representation, food and beverage and travel retail teams.

Strachan said: “The post-Covid recovery combined with dramatic changes across the real estate market offer CWM an opportunity for growth unique in its history and I am thrilled to have been invited to play a part in that.”

Scott Murdoch, founding partner of CWM, said: “I think everyone would agree the retail world has structurally changed forever and this started happening way before Covid.

“As a consequence CWM have pivoted our business in exciting new directions in recent years and there is simply no-one more qualified to lead us into a new exciting phase of growth than John – we feel super excited and privileged he has agreed to chair our business.”
