Fossil folly set to fuel single-lot sale

A ruined folly with an 18th-century fossil collection incorporated into its limestone walls will go under the hammer in a single-lot auction next month. The Grade II-listed Dinton Castle, in Dinton, Buckinghamshire, was built in 1769 by Sir John Vanhattem, who owned nearby Dinton Hall until his death in 1789. It is thought the octagonal folly was built to store Vanhattem’s extensive fossil collection. Dinton Castle has a guide price of £75,000 and will be offered by estate agent Michael Anthony on 26 November at the Holiday Inn in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
