UK architect Foster & Partners has unveiled plans for the world’s tallest building on the former site of the World Trade Center in New York.
The architect is one of seven which have revealed plans for the site of the former WTC twin towers. The towers came down on 11 September, 2001, when two hijacked airlines were crashed into them, killing thousands of people.
The seven architects, which were selected from over 400 submissions by the Lower Manhattan Development Corp (LMDC) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, are:
- Think
- Skidmore, Owings & Merrill
- Foster & Partners
- Studio Daniel Libeskind
- United Architects
- Richard Meier, Peter Eisenman, Charles Gwathmey, and Steven Holl
- Peterson/Littenberg Architecture and Urban Design LLP
The architects all worked within a requirement that calls for 6.5m sq ft to 10m sq ft of offices, a hotel, a shopping mall and other retail space.
Foster & Partners’ tower, at 1,764 feet and 98 storeys, would exceed the world’s tallest building – the 1,500ft (457m) Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur – in height.
